Keep up to Date

To highlight some of the cutting edge imaging technology available across Scotland, we're running a 'Spotlight on Facilities' series. We will be highlighting a microscope or piece of kit for each facility every month, one that might not be widely known about or that might be of interest to the Scottish microscopy community.

Our first spotlight is on Dundee Imaging Facility, who have a Leica Stellaris 8 with FLIM capabilities. Find out all the information via the link on their facilities database page.

The Scottish Microscopy Facilities Database is a modern tool that exemplifies the Society's 4 key principles:
  • Promote microscopy research facilities in Scotland
  • Inform on new technologies and funding prospects
  • Connect microscopy developers and researchers
  • Inspire collaboration across disciplines and institutions
We currently have 26 facilities listed, offering access to over 100 different optical and electron imaging technologies. There are plenty of different ways to search the database to help connect you to the best imaging technology for your application.

Find out about winners of SULSA facilities funding on our website.

Facility Workshops

If any facilities are interested in hosting workshops, either to showcase their existing equipment or to demo new technologies, we are happy to support and facilitate these. Please get in touch at scotmicro@outlook.com to discuss.

Thank you to all of the companies who sponsored us for making it possible to maintain this database.

Congratulations to the winners of our Christmas imaging competitions!

Research Image Competition - sponsored by Nikon

Winning Image: Blood Vessel Comet - Dr Karla Neves, University of Glasgow
In the image, we have a human blood vessel isolated from gluteal biopsies. In the centre, you see the lumen of the vessel (black hole), where the blood flows through, which is surrounded by endothelial cells captured in yellow. Glowing in green we have the smooth muscle cells that are responsible for the vessel to widen and narrow. And finally, the outer yellow layer represents the adventitia, which is composed of fibroblasts, nerve fibers and other components. Our research aims to understand why blood vessels do not function properly in people with high blood pressure. We hope to understand the biological mechanisms underpinning dysfunctional blood vessels to also help scientists discover new drug targets to better treat high blood pressure.

Video Competition - sponsored by VisiTech International

Winning Image: Dancing in the Dark - Dr Simona Buracco, CRUK Beatson Institute
Dictyostelium discoideum cells expressing LifeAct-GFP or mCherry-WASP and migrating under agarose following a folate gradient. Cells were imaged using the LSM880 with Airyscan.

Christmas Cracker - sponsored by FocalPlane

Find out more about the winning Christmas Cracker image in this FocalPlane post.

Imaging in Action - sponsored by Zeiss

NOTiCE, Glasgow - 20th-21st 2023

NOTiCE is a small-scale symposium on novel optical technology for cardiac electrophysiology. NOTiCE aims to create a synergy between the strongest proponents of optical imaging, microscopy and manipulation technology applied to investigating the heart.

The cardiophotonics community is invited to participate in NOTiCE with an abstract submission. Contributions are invited to participate in poster and flash presentations and one full oral talk will be selected from the abstract submission- our mystery speaker!

Abstract submission deadline: 12th February 2023

MMC2023, Manchester - 4th-6th July 2023

The Microscience Microscopy Congress (mmc) is back with a bang in 2023! One of the biggest events of its kind in Europe, mmc2023 incorporating EMAG 2023 will bring you the very best in microscopy, imaging and cytometry from across the globe. With six parallel conference sessions, a world-class exhibition, workshops, satellite meetings, an international Imaging Competition and more, it’s simply the place to be for anyone who uses a microscope for work, study or pleasure.

Back at the superb Manchester Central conference centre for the first time since 2019, the event will be taking place fully in person, providing the perfect opportunity for the scientific community to come together, make connections and share their research. As always, many of the leading companies in microscopy and imaging will be on hand to demonstrate the very latest equipment and technology at the exhibition.

Abstract submission deadline: 10th February 2023

ESRIC Super-Resolution Summer School, Edinburgh - 17th-21st July 2023

The ESRIC Summer School is designed to give participants a thorough grounding in super-resolution microscopy in an informal setting. It brings together leading academics in the field and the major suppliers of super-resolution microscopes to provide expertise and guidance in the theory, practise and analysis of techniques including structured illumination microscopy (SIM), stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy, single molecule localisation microscopies (e.g. PALM, dSTORM, DNA-PAINT), and super-resolution radial fluctuations (SRRF) microscopy.

The course will be held in person for the first time since 2019. The Summer School is suitable for anyone with prior experience of fluorescence microscopy looking to exploit the benefits of super-resolution microscopy for their research.

Registration: 1st-31st March 2023

Announcing Scottish Microscopist of the Year Award

We are planning some exciting changes this year, including introducing Scottish Microscopy Society memberships and an annual Scottish Microscopist of the Year Award. This award will aim to highlight a particular microscopy achievement. Keep an eye on our mailing list and socials for more information in the coming months.

Microscope Parts Exchange

New items are often added to our Microscope Parts Exchange. Keep an eye on available equipment to help us re-home unused microscopy equipment and let us know if you have any equipment that you would like to advertise.

Currently available parts include:

4 Microscopes available from Carol Chapman at St Johns Microbiology Department in Livingston. One needs a bulb, two are ok, one seems to have no power going in so would need the electrics checked.Get in contact at scotmicro@outlook.com if interested.

1 slow-scan CCD 2k x 2k on-axis camera for TEM with control box and parts. Contact leandro.lemgrubersoares@glasgow.ac.uk if interested.

Parts Exchange Success Stories

CRUK Beatson Advanced Imaging Resource (BAIR) kindly passed on two unused microscopes to:
  • the Vascular Imaging Group at the University of Strathclyde. The microscope has already been used for imaging slides after immunostaining.
  • Professor Peter McCaffery at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), University of Aberdeen. This donation was facilitated by the Microscopy and Histology Core Facility in the IMS.
Thank you to Nikki Paul at BAIR for sorting it all out!

RMS Microscopy Activity Kits

The SMS has paired with the RMS to distribute their Microscopy Activity Kits around Scotland.

To learn more about what the kit contains, follow the link to the RMS website. To to book the kit for an event around Scotland email us directly at scotmicro@outlook.com or use the web contact form.
